Effective Advocacy

The NSW Mental Health Act 2007 provides the legal framework for care and treatment of people experiencing mental illness or distress. The Act reinforces your rights to choice and control over your recovery, to be able to make decisions with the support required to do so.

This session will provide a framework for you to explore what that means for your recovery and effective ways of self-advocating and/ or advocating for others when rights denied or needs not met.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand ‘supported decision making’ and ‘advocacy’
  • Understand the link between the Act and the rights of a person experiencing mental distress and/or mental health recovery
  • Explore practical and effective ways to self-advocate and/or advocate for others
